Soon to be at a grocer near you, Cannabis Coca-Cola?
As state after state continues to pass legislation legalizing medical and recreational marijuana, even Donald Trump is considering a congressional bill that would theoretically make weed legal at the national level. The United States would be only the third nation in the world to achieve this remarkable legislative fete. Uruguay was the first, and Canada recently passed a federal law just a few months ago.
Even the Coca-Cola Company is getting involved in the cannabis craze. Reports are now surfacing that the soft drink giant is currently in discussions with Aurora Cannabis based in Toronto to possibly create an entire line of beverages laced with Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD. Very shortly, people around the world might see Cannabis Coke in the aisles of their local grocers.

But the news doesn’t end there. The Coca-Cola Company also has plans for CBD-infused alternatives to Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and even Powerade and Dasani bottled water. According to Bloomberg, the new beverage line will be using a non-psychoactive cannabis strain that provides many of the associated health benefits of cannabis without the user feeling high. They will also be marketed as “recovery” beverages.
“Coca-Cola Co. is in ‘serious talks’ with Aurora Cannabis Inc. to develop cannabis-infused beverages, a groundbreaking move that would signal a significant foray into the marijuana sector by one of the world’s most iconic consumer brands, multiple sources familiar with the matter told BNN Bloomberg.”
“The sources said that Coca-Cola the world’s largest beverage company, is interested in developing beverages that are infused with cannabidiol, commonly referred to as CBD, the non-psychoactive chemical found in marijuana plants.”
This is not the first time that the Coca-Cola Company has considered a new line of somewhat controversial yet forward-thinking soft drinks. In the past, Coke has been approached by several interested parties to create both alcoholic and marijuana-infused beverages. Just a few months ago, the Ontario-based Aphria Incorporated – another cannabis company in Canada – also began discussions with Coca-Cola to create a similar line of weed-friendly drinks, but the deal ultimately fell through.
In the past, Coke’s decades-old reputation as being the world’s most family-friendly soft drink and as American as Mom’s apple pie may have caused upper management to be a bit skittish in developing these new types of products. But times are changing. Marijuana’s global reputation is soaring, among the general public as well as on Wall Street. Shortly after Coke’s announcement of a possible partnership with Aurora to creak Cannabis Coke, the company’s stock prices spiked. Aurora’s did as well, skyrocketing 17 percent in a matter of hours.
